Emergency Notice Regarding Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

posted Mar 3, 2020, 11:04 AM by Hiromi Takahashi

Dear Japanese Language School Guardians,

With the emergence of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) starting in China and since moving rapidly throughout the world, the Japanese government has just recently requested the closure of all schools up the high school level in Japan.

At the JLS, the School Board has convened to create guidelines in an attempt to address the unique environment of the JLS despite being in currently low-risk USA.  We are monitoring the local, national, Japanese and global conditions through news media, the CDC website and information from the Japanese government and the Medford School District.  Future guideline changes will be shared as soon as possible – including possible temporary closures.

Thank you very much for your ongoing understanding and support for the Japanese Language School of Greater Boston (JLS).

1. Overview

Given the continuous increase of infected cases in Japan (and other countries) as well as the concentrated population of JLS families where a member may have traveled to Japan, it is necessary to consider special and elevated measures to prevent a possible infection cluster centered around the Medford High School facility which we rent out on Saturdays.

We request that families of students, faculty and staff to refrain from coming to the JLS where any

co-residing family member has returned from a CDC Level 2 or Level 3 Warning Level Country.  Please refer to Section 2.

This will be applied from February 29, 2020 till the end of the school year on March 14, 2020

until further notice.

2. Request to all JLS Families (Students, Faculty, Staff)

a) If any family member has returned from an Affected Geographic Areas with Widespread or Sustained Community Transmission – CDC Level 2 (Alert) or Level 3 (Warning) :

-Refrain coming to the JLS for two weeks starting from those returning after February 15.

-If any family member shows COVID-19 symptoms, contact your local health authority as well as the JLS Office.

-If, after two weeks, no family member shows any COVID-19 symptoms, resume coming to the JLS.
